Plants have been my life since a very young age as my father was the botanist to the Sultan of Brunei in the early 60s and we lived many years in and around the rainforests of Borneo. We travelled extensively until he became director of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston.
So flora and fauna have always been a big part of my life and when I started paper modelling fifteen years ago it seemed very natural for me to progress to making these three dimensional botanical pictures.

It began with the flowers from our meadow in Suffolk and progressed to the more complicated and intricate larger works that I make now. I spend time studying and sketching the plant to help me understand its character. I also love the delicacy and design of old botanical illustrations and use them to help with composition, they are romantically evocative of times when life was slower and more considered.

Although the process is often frustrating and fiendishly fiddly I actually like the restrictions of the paper as it results in a very concise but hopefully sensitive representation of the subject.
